B: Specialist Diabetes clinics

1: Young adult clinic

This clinic is run for young patients with diabetes (16-25 years old). In addition to doctors in the clinic, a diabetes specialist nurse is available to help with problems such as blood glucose monitoring, insulin pens and changing insulin types and dosage. There is also a dietician in clinic. All adolescents attending the Paediatric diabetes clinic are initially seen in the paediatric/adult transitional clinic and then automatically transferred from there to the young adult clinic. 2: Diabetes in pregnancy clinic

This clinic is run jointly with Miss Pat Street, consultant obstetrician, and Deirdre Graham, diabetes specialist midwife. This is in order that obstetric and diabetes check-ups are done at the same time. The clinic is held in the obstetrics outpatient department. All women with diabetes should be referred to this clinic as soon as pregnancy is confirmed by calling reception on 0118 9878811, the diabetes specialist midwife on 01189877245 or by faxing a referral letter to 0118 9878810. Please refer as early as possible as pregnancy outcomes may be improved by tight glycaemic control in the first trimester. Any patient with diabetes seeking pregnancy can be referred to the general diabetes clinic for prepregnancy counselling.

3: Diabetic foot clinic

The Diabetic foot clinic is a specialised clinic for treatment of foot problems arising in people with diabetes. Foot ulcers and Charcot joints are some of the conditions managed at this clinic. Referrals can be made by contacting the Podiatry department or by sending/faxing a referral letter

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are at increased risk of diabetes as well as subfertility. This clinic has therefore been set up to address their specific needs. There is a dietician in this clinic and access to same day ovarian ultrasound. Please send a referral letter to Dr Elsheikh. Alternatively, refer using webmessenger

2: Thyroid cancer clinic

Patients with thyroid cancer need long-term follow up. This clinic is a joint clinic with the surgeons, oncologist (cancer specialist) and endocrinologist in addition to a specialist nurse and physicist. For appointments, please refer either to the Dr Elsheikh or Mr Marks, Consultant ENT Surgeon

4: Endocrine disorders in pregnancy clinic

All patients with pre-existing hormonal disorders who fall pregnant will be followed up in this clinic so that antenatal and hormonal check-ups are done at the same time.
