- Fast from midnight.
- Admit to hospital 0830h. Take blood for baseline glucose, insulin and C-peptide
- Patient is to remain active, may drink clear water, but no other food or drink.
- Repeat blood samples every 6hr and whenever symptoms develop
- Stop the test if the laboratory plasma glucose level is <2.5mmol/L and the patient has signs & symptoms of hypoglycaemia or after 48h.
- At 48h take a final set of blood samples for glucose, insulin and C-peptide.
- Feed the patient. Ensure normalisation of blood glucose prior to discharge.
Samples
Glucose: grey fluoride/oxalate vial.
Insulin & C-peptide: green lithium heparin vial cooled in iced water, must be received in the laboratory within 30 minutes of venepuncture.
